Why we love Geelong and Bellarine weddings

Geelong is not only Victoria’s second-largest city, but it is also a fascinating mix of beautiful beaches, fantastic wineries, vibrant city life, and an industrial past. Given all this, it is not surprising that it makes an ideal location for a wedding. Here is why we love Geelong and Bellarine so much for weddings.

What makes Geelong great for weddings

Geelong has a number of stunning wedding venues, from beachside to industrial settings. It is also home to some of Australia’s best regional dining, with some truly high-quality food options. These restaurants include but are not limited to succulent dining options at wineries, with other great eateries in town such as the famous IGNI, and The Greek Customs House.

The Bellarine Peninsula is also blessed with some beautiful beaches and marine landscapes, from prime surf beaches to the pristine, family-friendly sands of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. There are some beautiful Bellarine wineries located right on the beach, with cool-climate vineyards producing some very fine vintages and the combination of vines and sea creating the perfect setting for your ceremony or reception.

On the other end of the scale are Geelong’s amazing industrial spaces. Geelong has a long history in manufacturing, and today these industrial spaces have been converted into hip cafes, restaurants, accommodation, and galleries. Former wool mills have become craft breweries, such as the Little Creatures Brewery and White Rabbit Brewery & Barrel Hall. These places offer unique wedding venues, as well as cool locations for wedding photos.

In general, Geelong and Bellarina have much to offer any visitor and will delight and entertain your wedding guests. With miles of spectacular coastline, there are many water-based activities to enjoy here. Your guests can discover the underwater world with scuba diving, swim with dolphins, or go on a cruise to the Mornington Peninsula.

Additionally, this laid-back city offers a unique, relaxed atmosphere that will make your special day even more special. As Geelong wedding photographers, we of course also love that Geelong, and Bellarine in general, have such a wide variety of perfect locations for wedding photos.

Stunning locations for wedding photography in Geelong

Being a Geelong wedding photographer isn’t a difficult job, with so many stunning and diverse locations to choose from. The Bellarine Peninsula is blessed with some truly beautiful places, from stunning beaches and tranquil vineyards to the waterfront.

Not only does Geelong offer some great locations for pictures, it offers a wide variety of different types of places, meaning that we can find the perfect spot for any couple. Everyone has a different theme or vibe in mind for their wedding photos, and Bellarina has something to offer everyone, from industrial to ocean and nature. These are some of the best locations for wedding photos in Geelong.

The Waterfront

Geelong has a beautiful waterfront area backed by the Eastern Beach Reserve. This flat, smooth promenade runs along Corio Bay, framed with stunning views of the bay. The white, sandy beach is fringed by various attractions such as a Ferris Wheel and an historic carousel that dates back to the 19th century.

There is also the Cunningham Pier, where you can frequently find fishers casting a line. Along the waterfront are grand homes, swimming areas, and art sculptures.

Eastern Beach

At Eastern Beach you'll find the quirky Baywalk Bollards, whimsical figures carved from the wood of one of Geelong’s piers. The bollards are not only entertaining, but they also depict characters from local history.

There is also a picturesque Art Deco bathing pavilion which features diving boards and a sunbathing area. The fun bollards and the historic bathing pavilion, combined with the spectacular sunsets at Eastern Beach make for a great backdrop to your wedding photos.

Jetty Botanic Gardens

Another beautiful beach-side location in Geelong which makes a perfect background for wedding photos is the Jetty Botanic Gardens. This is an extremely photogenic location, with photo opportunities around every bend.

Established in 1851, these are among the oldest such gardens in Australia and are a truly peaceful and tranquil setting to take some wedding photos. The gardens feature a range of native plant species as well as Chilean wine palms, cork trees, and Californian palms and sequoia.

Geelong Train Station

The Geelong Train Station forms part of the Port Fairy Line, opened in 1856. Its historic 19th-century train shed, listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as being of state-level cultural significance, is one of two only of its kind in Australia.

The historic buildings of the station make an ideal backdrop for photos, as well as providing interesting elements for pictures, such as stairs which add layers and dimension to your wedding photos, making them more dynamic.

Beautiful churches

Geelong is blessed with a number of historic churches which provide architecturally-interesting backdrops for wedding photos, not to mention being nice potential wedding venues. Historic churches in the area include the stunning Christ Church, which is the oldest Anglican Church in Victoria, and St Peter’s and St Paul’s Catholic Church, which has a very picturesque facade ringed by roses.

On Yarra Street is St Mary of Angels Basilica Church, a Gothic revivalist construction completed in 1937. This church not only has a lovely facade, but it also has the tallest bluestone spire in Australia. It is also the tallest building in Geelong.

Johnstone Park

This Geelong Park part has as its centrepiece the Hitchcock Memorial Stand, an historical rotunda that was erected in 1873. A site for many performances and events, this beautiful rotunda also makes an ideal backdrop for photos.

Nearby is Geelong’s Peace Memorial. This special place is dedicated to all of those from the area who were lost at war. It is also a stunning example of architecture, providing many interesting settings.

Geelong Customs House

One of Geelong’s most important historical buildings, the Geelong Customs House is an important bluestone and freestone classical-style public building. Located near the foreshore in Geelong, the Customs House is a testament to the wealth accrued in the area during the gold rush. This provides a rich, historical backdrop that makes an ideal setting for your wedding photos.
