RAINY DAY MELBOURNE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IDEAS
Raining on your wedding day could sound like a really terrible thing that almost everyone doesn’t even want to think about it. But this is one thing you can’t control and unfortunately, it just happens sometimes.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you to get the perfect wedding photos even if it rains. To be honest, the most important thing is to relax and be happy! Don’t let the wet weather ruin your mood. Just stay positive and enjoy the day. Your photos always look much better when you are happy and smiling :)
Plan with your photographer in advance
Check the weather forecast and discuss it with your photographer for backup undercover locations. An experienced professional photographer should always know a few undercover places can be used if it rains. Some photographers might be happy to scout the area beforehand and find all the possible backdrops with shelters prior to the wedding.
Use clear umbrellas
Clear umbrellas let the light go through from above. If you use a dark umbrella, it will block the light and create dark light or shadow on your face, which forces the photographer to overexpose the background to balance out the shadow, hence losing the advantage of having contrasty colours and beautiful reflections brought by the rain.
Melbourne Summer Weddings
Summer is the most popular season for weddings in Melbourne. It has less rain compared to Winter, and even it is raining, it’s more likely to have breaks in between, short or long, but it will give the couples opportunities to head outside for some romantic photos without getting wet. Daylight saving will give you a lot of time for sunlight. You can even sneak out during the reception for a quick 10 minutes photoshoot if the rain stops at that time.
Melbourne Winter Weddings
Melbourne Winter usually has more rains than Summer. And it can get really cold as well. Our suggestion to Winter weddings is to try to start the ceremony a bit earlier because the daylight is limited due to the early sunset during this season, and it might get really dark even in the afternoon. So leaving some buffer time for the photoshoot could be very helpful.
The good things about rain for wedding photography
Surprisingly, the rain somehow brings lots of good elements for wedding photography. Firstly, the colours on a rainy day are much more vibrant and contrasty comparing to a sunny day and overcast day, thanks to the reflections from the wet surfaces.
Secondly, the light is much softer as the mist becomes a huge natural softbox and diffuses the light, making your skin on photos much smoother.
Rainy day locations for Wedding Photography Melbourne
When it comes to wet weather wedding day photography, here is the list of our favourite backup locations which can provide you spectacular backdrops and photo opportunities.
Fitzroy Town Hall
Fitzroy Town Hall has always been our NO.1 choice for rainy day locations. It is a heritage civil building with the Free Classical style of Victorian architecture, built back to late 1800s. It has 3 independent undercover sections and each feature unique backdrops for stunning wedding photos. It is usually very quiet so you don’t have to worry to wait for your turn to use the place.
Parliament House
Parliament House is the most well-known place for wet weather wedding photography. It offers a large area of covered space, marbled floor, spectacular colonnades, and elegant high ceilings.
However, it can be very crowded during any time of the day, and even more packed when it’s raining. Parking can be very tricky and you still need to walk up a lot of stairs to get to the top.
South Wharf
If you are looking for rainy day backup locations, this is possibly one of the best options. With lots of undercover spots in this busy business district, you will find yourself lost in this hive of bustling, creative promenade with boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and bars.
You will find heaps of fascinating choices of urban style, maritime & industrial look backdrops, such as restored 19th-century cargo sheds, kegs, graffiti, or wall arts.
Wurundjeri Way underpass provides a large area of undercover space, filled with many choices of photographic elements such as architectural curves, vanishing lines, concrete walls, and dramatic lighting.
Palais Theatre
Palais Theatre is right next to Melbourne’s famous amusement park Luna Park. The undercover area is not spacious but the beautiful light coming in from the side could be the perfect lighting for some most amazing bridal portraits. And if the rain is not too heavy you can also get some really fun and creative with surroundings such as Luna Park entrance and scenic railway wall.
