MELBOURNE CITY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Why we love Melbourne for weddings

As wedding photographers in Melbourne, perhaps we’re biased, but we think the Victorian capital is an amazing location to say your vows. From stunning venues and photo locations to that quintessential Melbournian vibe, Melbourne has much to offer any couple planning their wedding.

What makes Melbourne great for wedding photos

Melbourne is an ideal place to capture photos of your special day for many reasons. First of all, there is a huge variety of stunning photography locations, covering all types of settings. Melbourne has so many famous landmarks, all of which make great backdrops for pictures on your special day, and Melbourne’s skyline of tall buildings creates interesting lighting, which is ideal for creative photos.

Another great thing about Melbourne is the variety of locations for photos: you can choose between impressive architecture, characterful laneways, city streets, lush gardens, and more. Every couple is different, yet you’ll be sure to find a setting that suits your own personal tastes and style. The best wedding photographers in Melbourne will be able to suggest the perfect backdrops for memorialising your perfect day if you want any suggestions.

What’s more, many of these different locations are geographically close together, making it easy to travel between multiple locations to take a variety of photos. This is a great advantage when taking wedding photos, as couples often face time pressures on the day.

Other advantages of having your wedding in Melbourne

Melbourne is arguably Australia’s cultural and foodie capital, as well as frequently topping lists as the world’s most livable city. Melbourne city weddings also have that relaxed and laidback vibe that is so characteristic of the city. All of this, as well as certain logistical advantages that will make planning the big day much easier, makes it a great place for your special day.

Weather is an unpredictable factor with weddings anywhere, and in striving to be the best wedding photographer in Melbourne, we’re always on the lookout for ways to make our clients’ special day run as smoothly as possible. One of Melbourne’s big advantages is that it has a large range of indoor venues and photo locations that are under a protective cover, meaning your special day won't be disrupted if it rains.

Our favourite locations for wedding photography in Melbourne

As part of our wedding photography packages in Melbourne, we use a range of different locations. Luckily, there are plenty of great spots in Melbourne for wedding photos no matter what you’re looking for in your photos. You’ll find beautiful historical buildings, stunning parks and gardens, industrial landscapes and other fascinating locations. Here are a few of our favourite locations for breathtaking photos that will last a lifetime!

1. Fitzroy Gardens

One of the most beautiful green spaces in Melbourne, the historic Fitzroy Gardens are located very close to the centre of the city. Founded more than 150 years ago, the lush gardens feature majestic trees, from English Elms to Australian natives such as Bunya Bunya Pines and Moreton Bay Figs, as well as a conservatory and lovely fountains and statues. Here you’ll also find Captain Cook’s Cottage, the carved Fairies Tree and a model Tudor Village.

2. Carlton Gardens

Another beautiful park in the heart of Melbourne is the Carlton Gardens. The gardens are famed for their tree-lined avenues, formal flowerbeds, miniature lakes, and a stunning fountain. There is a range of exotic plant species here, as well as an array of native wildlife. This natural greenery combined with the traditional architecture of buildings like the world-heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building, which is located within the park’s grounds, makes a stunning backdrop for wedding photos.

3. Flinders Lane

The narrow and vibrant lanes of Melbourne’s CBD are some of the icons of the city. Flinders Lane is probably the most famous of them all, and it makes a great location to take wedding photos. Flinders Lane is believed to be one of the original lanes developed when Melbourne was settled in the 1830s. It's lined with beautiful old buildings. It is also vibrant and full of life, packed with cafes, bars and boutiques, thus giving photos an unparalleled level of energy.

4. St Kilda Beach & Luna Park

Melbourne’s most famous beach, St Kilda is conveniently located within easy reach of the city centre, making it a great choice for couples that want beachside wedding photos. This Melbourne icon is home to the equally famous Luna Park, which makes a quirky and unique setting for photos. Luna Park is over 100 years old and has many beloved features, such as the legendary Mr Moon mouth and its heritage Luna Park Carousel.

5. Albert Park

Just three kilometres outside the centre of Melbourne, Albert Park offers a green and natural setting for pictures. The park is famous for its large lake, frequently used for boating, sailing, and rowing. The park itself has a large amount of lush greenery, with the dramatic city skyline in the background. There is so much material here for stunning photos!

6. Victoria Barracks

Another architectural wonder, Victoria Barracks was built in the 19th century as the administrative headquarters of the Australian Army. The barracks are located on St Kilda Road, not far from the city centre and feature impressive government buildings drenched in vines as well as military paraphernalia. The historic architecture of the barracks makes a stunning and interesting backdrop for photos of your special day.

7. Southwharf

The industrial landscape of Southwharf offers unique backdrops to take some truly interesting shots. The former industrial sheds on the wharf have been meticulously restored and now house waterfront bars, restaurants, and cafes. The massive and impressive Melbourne Convention Centre is here too, with wide lawns in front that offer stunning views and cityscapes.

8. Fitzroy Town Hall

Fitzroy Town Hall is another of Melbourne’s architectural and historical treasures. Built in 1873, the building is ornate and truly magnificent, a legacy of the gold rush and Melbourne’s huge wealth at the time. Aside from being a beautiful photo location thanks to the gorgeous historical architecture, Fitzroy Town Hall has the advantage of being undercover in case it rains. This makes it a great spot for taking pictures in any type of weather.
